ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Auditions to visual arts programs require preparation. It is suggested that applicants begin preparing portfolios during the fall of seventh grade. Enrichment classes are held for portfolio and audition prep. Click the links above for specific portfolio requirements for individual schools and programs.
Portfolio
Most schools require a portfolio of at least 10 pieces, but no more than 20. Artwork should be varied in subject and medium and show knowledge of line, color, and value.
A sample portfolio might include:
·Line drawing of a figure or portrait
·Charcoal/pencil drawing of a still life
·Landscape painting demonstrating understanding of perspective and color
·Self-portrait (pencil, painting, collage)
·Technical drawing in one-point perspective
·Drawing or painting demonstrating understanding of depth and space
·Drawings and paintings demonstrating understanding of value
·Photograph of sculpture or large pieces.
Do not include any unoriginal work (copied) and no more than one cartoon (manga-type).
Pieces should be neat (not folded, rolled up, torn, or ripped from a book.) Nothing should be on lined paper. Each portfolio should be in a large folder or case. (Paper or cardboard portfolios are available at art supply stores.)
Students should bring their portfolios to class so that I can review with them. Photos of the originals are acceptable.
It is important to check the specific requirements of each school.
Some schools might require matting or framing, some require specific labels or statements. Some schools even have specific drawing requirements, depending on the program.
Audition
Although it varies in each audition, most schools will require an applicant to draw from observation and memory or imagination. Click on the links above for specific information about each school's audition process. It is important to practice this at home.
